Located on Forest Avenue across from the northwest corner of Silver Lake Park, Temple Israel Reform Congregation is proud of our 73 year history as a welcoming congregation for all Jewish lifestyles.  Our clergy and lay leadership are dedicated to Jewish education, inclusive worship and community involvement.   The Avis Foundation makes it possible for young families to join by providing financial support for their annual commitment for the first years of membership.   Please read on for more information!

A NOTE FROM OUR CO-PRESIDENTS

B’ruchim Habaim!  Welcome!  Thank you for visiting us on the web, and we hope to welcome you in person soon!

Temple Israel, Staten Island’s only URJ-affiliated Reform congregation, is a wonderful place to worship and socialize.

Temple Israel was founded in 1948 as the original home of Reform Judaism on Staten Island. Our congregation is diverse in every way – age, family structure, background, financial status, lifestyle, needs and interests. We embrace the entire Jewish community, including interfaith families. We are also an accessible facility so we can include everyone in our Temple community activities.

As a member, you will be able to fully participate in Shabbat and Holiday services and observances, dinners, and luncheons. You may also choose to enroll your children in our Hebrew/Religious school, which offers classes from pre-K to B’nei Mitzvah and on to a Confirmation program for High School students.  We also offer weekly Torah study, adult Bat/Bar Mitzvah and adult Confirmation classes, and Staten Island’s largest Judaic library — comprised of more than 2,000 volumes.  In addition, we offer opportunities for learning and fellowship throughout the entire year.

Our Avis Foundation, funded by a grant from our long-time member Dr. Ronald Avis, supports Temple Israel in two important ways:  First, young families will get dues support for their first years of membership.  Secondly, the Foundation supports many activities for all – from weekly Yoga sessions to learning courses on everything from cell phone photography to appreciating classical music as well as child and youth oriented programs.  See the message below from the Foundation.

In addition, we have two active service organizations at Temple Israel – Brotherhood and Sisterhood.  As a new member you would have a complimentary membership during your first year as a member of Temple Israel. These organizations are the backbone of our synagogue and provide excellent, varied and constant activities.

Please feel free to visit us on an upcoming Erev Shabbat.  Most services are at 7:30 PM, with the Family Service and birthday & anniversary celebration at 7 PM on the first Friday of the month.  Our services are streamed so if you choose not to attend in person, please contact the Temple office at 718-727-2231 for this Friday’s streaming link.

Do not hesitate to call the Temple office at (718) 727-2231 if you have questions and ask for one of us.  If we are unavailable at that time, your call will be returned.  We would be happy to help you explore the activities and committees at Temple that might interest you and your family.

This coming year is going to be an exciting one.  We would love to have you as a part of our community.

Jerry Gross & Alan Siegel, Co-Presidents.

THE AVIS FOUNDATION FOR TEMPLE ISRAEL REFORM CONGREGATION

Through the generosity of the Dr. Ronald Avis Foundation we are able to offer an incredible opportunity to young families with children. We are able to make it possible for the youngsters to obtain an education in Reform Judaism, attend Religious and Hebrew school and, at the same time, enjoy many additional cultural and educational opportunities. We offer STEAM classes, holiday festival packets, food preparation classes, pottery classes and museum trips to our children. They have the opportunity to develop relationships with other Jewish children. We also offer free Yoga and adult education classes to their parents and all Temple members throughout the year.
